  • Paragraph Writing — Develop endurance and rhythm in longer text

Finger Placement and Home Row Technique

Chapter 1 places strong emphasis on home row technique, including:

Chapter 1 Base Version lowercase letters and exercise layout
  • Index fingers on F and J
  • Middle fingers on D and K
  • Ring fingers on S and L
  • Pinky fingers on A, ;, Q, P, Z, /, [ , ] and ''
  • Thumbs on the spacebar only

Use the home row as your anchor. Return your fingers to the home keys after every keystroke.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Looking at the keyboard instead of the screen
  • Using the wrong finger for home row keys
  • Moving your hands too much instead of keeping them steady
  • Typing too fast too early before accuracy is established
  • Skipping sentence practice and focusing only on letters

Progress Tracking and Speed Benchmarks

Track performance using USTAAD’s built-in progress tools.

  • Accuracy: 90% or higher
  • Speed: 15–20 WPM by the end of the chapter
  • Daily practice: 20–30 minutes
  • Review: Repeat exercises until accuracy is consistent

Why this matters

Chapter 1 is designed to create a solid typing foundation. Strong lowercase accuracy is the key to success in later chapters.

What Comes Next

After completing Chapter 1, you will be ready to move to Chapter 2: Shift Version, where USTAAD introduces uppercase letters, capitalization, and mixed-case typing.
